House Tremere is prevailed in this tribunal by the standard rules which limits the game possibilities here compared to other locations and makes it boring for me. True Lineages states the tribunal has 41 Tremere magi and 20 other magi and redcaps are their guests. This situation might cause no problem for the average player but it doesn't suit for those who want to play a casual campaign with all the Houses here. So I definitely wrote it for local players. That's why I created this tribunal variant without Tremere domination. I moved the Tremere block in the Rhine and Alpen tribunals. This disciplined and precise house suits better to the German mindset than the Hungarian and Balkan attitude. This change solves the hermetic political problems and the area becomes playable. Furthermore I wanted a very magical and colorful tribunal. You may find the Hungarian virtues, supernatural and mundane information here.
The map below is based on the tribunal map of the rulebook that's why it contains Austrian, Styrian and modern day Albanian territories.
I like the dropping of the area of Albania from the tribunal simply because the remaining area can be more easily illustrated on a map.
Some mistakes I found in the book so far. I didn't read it completely because it's very painful to read so many blatant mistakes in the "history" part.
While I liked removing Albania, it's not the case with the modern day Styria, Carinthia and Eastern Austria. They were part of the tribunal in all the rulebooks yet, it was interesting to have a border which is not a state border, and another culture.
Page 36, map of Hungary
-At first Banate of Slovakia never existed. I
checked the net in the hope I find "alternative" theories but there's nothing so
I don't know from where this bullshit came from.
-Borders of 'Transylvanian Voivodeship' are probably from the 17th century from the
time of the Transylvanian Principality. The principality, again in the 17th century, consisted not only
Transylvania but other parts of Hungary, too. The area of the real Transylvania
is about half the size compared what the tribunal book calls Transylvania.
-Coeris is outside of the area of Transylvania because Máramaros county wasn't
part of it. It's not only visible it belongs to Máramaros but the text
explicitly mentions it. Another inconsistency is the place of Coeris. The rulebook and True
Lineages says it is found in the Southern Carpathians or its another name Carpathian
Alps, but the tribunal book places it in the Eastern Carpathians. The name of
Carpathian Alps appear on correct area where Coeris should be. Does this change
have any logical reason? No, it doesn't.
-Every settlement has modern, 20-21th century names and not the medieval names.
Except some Transylvanian cities which got German names. So you will have a hard
time if you want to compare it to a real historical map.
-Where the Croatia name appears it was Slavonia as known as Banate of Slavonia
which was part of Hungary and not Croatia.
-Bosnia was a Banate as well. Not a big deal but it's inconsistent with the name
of other territories this way. Its area reached to the river
Sava and not the Drava.
-The territory on the bottom under the Sava and Danube was Banate of Macsó and
there should be a castle with this name.
Page 45, map of Bulgaria
-It's funny they placed the Bulgaria label on
the area of Cumania.
-Nish was part of Serbia in 1220.
Page 67, map of the 'Slavic Lands'
-The Serbian-Bulgarian border was the river Morava
and Nish is on the left side so it was part of Serbia.
-The medieval Croatia was far smaller from the sea to the northeastern side of
the Dinari mountains. From the river Sava to the Croatia laber there was Banate of
Slavonia, part of Hungary and not Croatia.
-Area of the Banate of Bosnia reached only to the Sava on the north.
-Only the city of Zara was in Venetian hands and not the whole peninsula.
-Spalato belonged to Croatia and here lied its southern border.
-Zagreb is at the Sava river.
The rulebook comes up with an interesting case the nobles of Hungary aren't obliged to make Oath of Fealty so they may have lands without serving anyone. This is true. However every landowners in Hungary even with a tiny land were required to go in war to fight for the king. And wars were frequent. So judge yourself if such military service means serving or not. Everything depends on interpretation of the code and the tribunal probably has a ruling.
Every magus has a vote. Those who are the parens of one magus at least are called magisters and have an additional vote. Archmagi have an extra vote as well.
If a magus misses two tribunals he considered as he gone forever and his name is deleted from the list of magi.
The name of the tribunal in Latin is tribunal transsylvanae. It separated from the Theban Tribunal in 864.
If you use the Covenants supplement, in Hungary and the Cuman lands breeding steppe horses cost only paying one or two wranglers because they are on pasture. Heavy horses for heavy cavalry fight have the usual upkeep because they need stables and forage.
The Hungarians were nomadic people earlier and their ancient spirits still give Gifts to some of their children. Magi must be careful to only choose purely Gifted children because the spirits' Gift isn't really suitable to train in Hermetic way. They can be distinguished from other Gifted children if someone knows what to search. Cuman, Pecheneg, Uz (Oguz) children are not suitable for hermetic training. Only magi of the Bjornaer and the Ex Miscellanea houses are able to successfully train Spirit-Gifted children.
There are a few hundreds of non-hermetic wizards in the tribunal. There is an informal agreement not to join them to the Order because they would dominate its politics. So if someone "discovers" such a wizard he has a reason with it. Tremeres instantly started wizard war on such newcomers in the past. The non-hermetic wizards are usually live apart, they have no organizations and they often don't know each other. They aren't educated and don't have books.
Slavs understand each other easily. Some Slavic nations hadn't evolved in this period yet, so they were called just Slavs. Another reason you read below the Slav term because some magi don't publish to which Slavic nation they belong.

Coeris | The Tremere Domus Magna was founded by Tremere personally in
the Southern Carpathians in a sheltered valley. Here is a gate of the
underworld, the funeral place of all Tremere magi, their ashes are brought
here from everywhere. (The tribunal book Against the Dark
places Coeris (KO-e-ris,
but local peasants who don't know Latin often call it KŐ-rish, 'ő' is like 'i'
in Kirk. It is the Hungarian equivalent of ash tree) far North of the Transylvanian Alps and even outside of the
historical Transylvania.) In the last years of the Schism War Diedne magi attacked Coeris. The aggressors did not cause much damage to the magi, but most of the grogs and servants were killed after all. This caused serious stoppages in the life of the Coeris, since it is difficult to hire hundreds of servants overnight. It came in handy, that the Bulgarians suffered serious defeat from the Greeks (Byzantines) in 1014, and thousands of the Bulgarian prisoners were blinded and sent home. The magi agreed with some Bulgarians, that their eyesight is given back in exchange of their lifelong service. The new eyes the Bulgars grew were colored amber, the sigil of the maga who cast the ritual. Many of the covenfolk have inherited this eye color, which deepens with Warping. Even today, two hundred years later this eye color is still common. Amber eye color appear naturally in mundane people as well, it's not a supernatural thing. There is a large pack of trained white wolves in Coeris and a few packs in the wilderness. Their unusual white fur is easy to spot from greater distance. Many Tremere magi have such white wolf familiars. People say these wolves explore the ground and there are some werewolves between their grogs. In the last decades many Vlachs settled in the covenant and on their lands. Their language is similar to Latin which seemed useful for magi. Coeris built a cordial contact with the Teutonic Order who have possessions near the covenant. They never search between nomad (Cuman) children for apprentices because their Gift has too many shamanistic features and the situation is the same with many Hungarian children. Hermanus, the one-time primus of the Tremeres and obsessive constructor of magical devices charged with protecting Coeris disappeared in 1098 along with part of the covenant itself. Probably he reached final twilight. You may find a module to this issue in Legends of Hermes. Tremeres keep an assembly, the next Decenial will be in 1228. They give Te, An and Vi vis in exchange for He, Me and Co vis. |

Csodaszarvas (Cervus Miraculosus) | The Hungarian name Csodaszarvas (CHO-dah-saar-vash) means
Miraculous Deer, and it stands on the Hungarian Lowlands, only 1km from the
city Gyula, by the river Körös quasi. Since 1202 they have a local
establishment in the Kál Basin, where 2 black fairies Merinita, 1 Ex
Miscellanea witch and 1 Tytalus lives. This latter place called Kőtenger (KŐ-ten-gehr,
ő is like 'i' in Kirk) means Sea of Stones or Mare Lapideum in Latin. It is
said Péter and Karoldu were dropped after an enormous quarreling. Their
number has multiplied and the group is planning to found an own convenant
since a decade already, but they were not able to be equal to each other
since then. The magic of Bjornaers and the Ex Miscellanea magi is of táltos origin except one. The Ex Miscellanea táltoses are shapeshifters who can change to bulls and most of them to horses, too. Their third shape used to be a kind of bird. Members of these houses can teach also children who got their Gift from spirits (Cumans and some Hungarians). Bugac created a smaller stud out of perfect horses with his magic, what they cross only their own táltos horses sometimes. Bugac is willing to create a perfect horse for anybody in exchange for 8 vis, or one may receive one of the progeny for 4 vis. The Latin magi scoff at it between each other, that the táltos shapeshifters themselves covered mares and the stud came into existence that way. In Csodaszarvas there are not magus towers, all magi use their own houses as laboratories. The Bjornaer and the Ex Miscellanea magi live in two big tents (yurts) in the summer. The magi usually gather in the tent of their leader every evening in summer and in his house in winter. They built up houses likewise in Kőtenger but those magi aren't social at all. They give Mu, An and Im vis in exchange for Au, Re and Vi vis. |
12 | autumn | 952 | 3 Bjornaer, 4 Ex Miscellanea, 3 Merinita, 2 Tytalus |
Iagodina | It is found in Bulgaria in the Orpheus mountains and it is
in connection with the Yagodina cave system. Some of their stocks are found
in caves. The grogs are bogumil heretics however the magi don't care about
it. Some of their magi are descendants of a dragon or fairies. They give Ig vis for Cr, Me and Co vis. |
9 | autumn | 1058 | 3 Flambeau, 2 Merinita, 2 Mercere, 1 Guernicus, 1 Ex Miscellanea |
Plitvice | It settles down in a Regio in Croatia, at Plitvice (Plit-vih-tzeh)
lakes. It has more entrances, but only one is known for the
outsiders. In the regio all magi has an own tower. The known
entrance is
surrounded by stone walls from inside, the stranger arrives into a stone
doorway. Grain is produced within, and the seasons are reversed than
outside. Because of this it has on the one hand much better their living
conditions, since they secure fresh food any time, on the other hand much
coming and going wears the body down in winter and summer. They make money from Levante trade routs and are able to get exotic goods. The covenant has a chapter house in Zadar and two merchant cogs. They give Aq, Vi and Re vis in exchange for He, Me and Cr vis. |
8 | autumn | 918 | 2 Jerbiton, 3 Verditius, 3 Bonisagus |
Pilis | We may find it in the Pilis (Pih-lish) mountains, beside the
peak Dobogókő. Pilis is actually the name of the mountains where the
covenant is found and there is a county with the same name.
Dobogókő means pulsating stone. The area is a dense woodland and royal hunting ground. Esztergom is only 15 km distance, this city is the center of the Esztergom
archbishopric and one of the main centers of Hungary. The covenant disguises itself as a monastery where the magi are considered as lay brothers. Problems arise, for example magae have to disguise themselves to men but the naughty children of the Jerbiton family would be inexplicable. So it is better they like to reside in Esztergom. The magi are religious therefore Sunday mass visit is expected. The risky place is accompanied by an extraordinary aura. They have a common lab, the strength of which aura of 10 surpasses everything else and 5 on the rest of the location. The lab place with high aura is also well-equipped and leased for 2 vis per season, and reserved for 10 years. The prominent spellcasting and the magic with visible effects are prohibited, this is requested from guests, too. They give He, Me and In vis for Cr vis. |
8 | summer | 1044 | 2 Guernicus, 4 Jerbiton, 1 Flambeau, 1 Mercere |
Nysa | Half day riding from the city of Ni (Nish), the covenant
was found in Nysa (NI-sah), the mystic place where Dionysos was nourished
his infancy and childhood by rain-nymphs. Dozens of apprentices died or lost in the covenant but the quesitorial examination found no crimes some decades ago. Its main sight is Ivo's breathtakingly beautiful magus tower created from colorful opal, that onto the largest grief of the magus has to be disguised before outsiders. They give Pe and Im vis for Re vis. |
6 | winter | 810 | 1 Flambeau, 1 Bonisagus, 1 Bjornaer, 1 Verditius, 1 Merinita, 1 Tytalus |
Cuman Marsh (Palus Cumana) | It can be found in the
marshes of the estuary of Danube.
A Hungarian Ex Miscellanea founded it, who left to twilight 10-15 years ago.
It has rich vis sources. They rent the place from a dragon or
a lizard-like being. The price is not known, apparently not vis. The grogs are
bought as slaves because they don't find volunteers easily. The covenant has
no fortification just houses. A secular army cannot approach it because of the natural protection of the marsh. From spring to autumn the Cuman magi dwell in big tents (yurts). Magic keeps the mosquitoes and other
bothersome insects away. They give much Pe and Cr vis in exchange for Ig, Co and He vis. |
6 | summer | 1156 | 4 Ex Miscellanea, 2 Tytalus |
Rotburg (Castellum Rubrum) |
The name means red castle in German and the covenant can be
found in Styria (Steiermark), a couple days from Graz to the southwest in a
valley between the mountains. Its towers are hexagon shaped and their red
substance is spectacular. Its members came mostly from the Rhine and Greater
Alps tribunals. Strangers often end up in the village Redturm instead which has a red castle, too,
and it can be found from Graz to the east. They have good Co and Au vis sources and currently they don't trade. |
5 | spring | 1218 | 1 Tremere, 2 Verditius, 1 Flambeau, 1 Tytalus |
A covenant stood once in the western marshes of the lake Balaton, which was destroyed at the time of the Magyar (Hungarian) conquest among unknown circumstances. The ambiguous sources say their destiny may have been the Hungarians or a monster. A young covenant established on Attila hill was crushed by an enraged seven-headed dragon in 1023, and another covenant founded at the same place hundred years later. Even their traces are destroyed already. The hill is only a few meters high on the completely flat Lowlands. A covenant stood on the sugar mountain of Zvečan in Kosovo, which involved in wizards war with Nysa, and was destroyed in 1085. According to the legends the conflict started after a magus destroyed the magical library of Nysa. Its two remained towers were integrated by walls by the local Serb magnate and today serve as parts of a castle. Close to the estuary of the river Olt there was a Tremere covenant, Dolostron. There was a covenant in the ancient times near Durrachion (Durazzo) and that's why the tribunal incorporates the area of the modern day Albania.

Arenta | Coeris | Ex Miscellanea | 30 | Hungarian woman, táltos, she had no hermetic parens and doesn't know hermetic magic. Being only a nominal member she has never been in Coeris. Joined the Order because Dragan the Flambeau otherwise would have killed her following the join or die principle. The Tremeres do not reckon her as a member, she is excluded from the life of the covenant. This does not disturb her, because she wished to continue her own life in her little village. Although the hermetic gifts are fascinating, she is prestigious already and her name is known as a clairvoyant apart Kolozs and Torda counties. |
Zoltán | Csodaszarvas | Bjornaer | 120 |
Hungarian. Leader of the covenant. Survivor of the covenant on the Attila
hill destroyed by a dragon. During the Hungarian raids in the 10th century some captured táltoses were initiated in the Order in the Rhine Tribunal and the Bjornaers here are their descendants. The original branch still lives in Crintera covenant in the Rhine tribunal and searches for apprentices between Hungarians. |

Was born in 990 and he has seen King Saint István, the founder of the Kingdom of Hungary but he was living in Fairyland for a year while 99 years passed in the real world. +A |
Péter the Black | Csodaszarvas, Kőtenger | Merinita | 93 | Hungarian. Leader of Kőtenger. Has black fairy blood, dark skin and dreadful appearance. Known about bringing slave women with him even to tribunals. Filius of Tiván who was too naive those years and regretted raising him to a magus. After flopping with Vesna he wants to persuade Ivo of Nysa to make him a basalt tower. |
Lilium | Csodaszarvas, Kőtenger | Merinita | 54 | Hungarian woman, black fairy blooded, dark skinned changeling. Often called Black Lilium similarly like Péter thus many young magi believe she is his daughter however she was only his apprentice. Cute woman, and crazy lights appear in her eyes when she's enthusiastic. |
Karoldu | Csodaszarvas, Kőtenger | Ex Miscellanea | 74 | Hungarian woman. She was already an experienced witch when she joined the Order around 1190. At the time of joining she provenly didn't use infernal powers. She wants to enforce her own will in Kőtenger and doesn't acknowledge Péter's leadership. She has a dozen black cats, which seem to understand human speech. +A |
Rattus or Patkány | Csodaszarvas, Kőtenger | Tytalus | 42 | Hungarian. Patkány or Rattus in Latin means rat and his original name was Sámson. Magi generally consider his parens, Vid gave him this hermetic name to play hell with him. Very handsome and talented magus, if he would not be self-conceited so much, maybe the other magi would ignore his humiliating hermetic name. What is more he considered insulting when some magi called him on his original name. |
Kilián | Pilis | Guernicus | 115 | Hungarian. Strict leader of the covenant. Was a quaesitor until he became covenant leader. |

Márton from genera Gyovád | Pilis | Jerbiton | 48 | Hungarian. Spends more time in the city of Esztergom, than in the covenant, where he enjoys the noble courts' splendor. They know him as a famous hunter. |
Krisztina from genera Pilis | Pilis | Jerbiton | 36 | Hungarian woman. Daughter of Simon, wife of Márton. None of their 5 children has the Gift. Magi say she didn't cast a spell since her gauntlet and hasn't a laboratory. The family lives in Esztergom. |
Husvét | Pilis | Flambeau | 75 | Hungarian. Religious. His name means Easter. |
Ipolit | Pilis | Mercere | 85 | Hungarian. Religious, spare man, shapeshifter, travelling in the form of a falcon. Husband of Elpida. +A |
Hristo | Iagodina | Flambeau | 144 | Bulgarian. Mythic blood: Zmey. Leader of the covenant. Last year he blew up his tower, the ceiling of which plunged, and smashed Boris's lab killing his filia. The damaged tower was replaced since then, but Boris is not willing to move with him into a same tower though, however there is no more place in their aura to build another one. So that none of them have labs currently. |
Boris | Iagodina | Guernicus | 187 | Bulgarian. Archimagus. Foundation member of the covenant. Spent 7 years in twilight recently, he came back 2 years ago. At first he was a hoplite, later, around 1170 he learnt everything to be a Quesitor, too. He is the main quaesitor of the tribunal. |
Dragan | Iagodina | Flambeau | 111 | Bulgarian. Mythic blood: Zmey. Nephew of Hristo. His tower is surrounded by 20 meters fog all the year, thin in the summer, thick in winter. +A |

Disappeared 4 years ago, maybe he is in twilight and will came back. Aleksandar make his apprentice work, she should make the gauntlet theoretically after two years. +A |
Victor | Nysa | Bonisagus | 216 | Vlach. He was known as a book and spell collector once who collected and restored the destroyed magical library of the covenant after their wizards war. According to the hearsay the collection is great. His tiny horns signs fairy's ancestry unambiguously. He moves out from the covenant in the time of tribunals only. Spell mastery books made his name known. |
Ivo | Nysa | Merinita | 150 | Serb. Archimagus. It is said after his gauntlet he stopped the examination of magic and spent his time with entertainment and in fairies' company. Changed after a twilight though, started to learn diligently and reached finally the archmagus grade. His opal tower made him famous. Longevity ritual specialist. |
